Dr. Garrett Wdowin
There is a large amount of medical data supporting the consumption of an organic diet. Over the past few
years the research has linked pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides with a number of chronic disease
processes including autism, Parkinson’s, and cancer. This is an easy connection to make in ones’ mind
because pesticides are designed to kill via the disruption and destruction of the central nervous system.
With this knowledge most people want to eat an organic diet, yet it can get very expensive especially for a
family to purchase all organically grown fruits and vegetables. Money doesn’t stretch as far as we would like
it to, so if we have to, we’ll prioritize.
Environmental Working Group (EWG), www.EWG.org, is a non-profit organization whose mission is to use
public information to educate the public on health and environmental issues. Recently they tested 47 fruits
and vegetables for pesticides and then created a ranking from the data obtained. The data showed peaches
were the worst for pesticide exposure followed closely by apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, and
strawberries. The best conventionally grown item to eat was the onion, followed by avocado, sweet corn,
pineapples, mango, and asparagus.
EWG has put together a little card that one may print out and take to the market with them, called “The
Shoppers Guide to Pesticides”. This list is a summary of the “Dirty Dozen” and the “Clean 15” to help shoppers
make educated decisions in the supermarket to lower their own, and their families, exposure to pesticides.
It is estimated that a persons’ exposure to pesticides can be lowered by almost 80 percent if they refrain from
eating the “Dirty Dozen” and instead eat the “Clean 15”. I suggest you view the full list of 47 fruits and
vegetables and download the guide from www.FoodNews.org. This is important and free information that we
can utilize to protect ourselves and our families from a greater pesticide exposure.
